Here you could taste wines from all over the world as well as Italian bruschetta, pasta dishes and Aubergine Parmigiana.

The Winery: 153 bottles of wine for unforgettable aperitifs and dinners in Berlin

Wine and food: an expected combination – especially for Italian people. However, it could be less predictable if we live in Berlin and we talk about these two terms and all their possible matches.

Read the article in Italian and German.

For example, a glass of Merlot goes well with a course of Aubergine Parmigiana or with a bruschetta seasoned with aubergines and pecorino (Italian sheep’s milk cheese). As an alternative, you can drink a glass of Franciacorta together with a course of rigatoni (a kind of Italian pasta) seasoned with ragout. If you want to try one of this excellent matches, you just have to go to The Winery, in the district of Friedrichshain – Frankfurter Tor, 7.

The Winery is a very particular place, characterized by a suffused and welcoming enlightenment and casks used as tables for two. Here the inaugural party of the Italian Film Festival Berlin 2015 was held. Furthermore, every week Caribbean dance courses and belly dance courses are held here.

It is different from the other pubs in Friedrichshain, a district in the East side of Berlin. It looks like a new and modern place, like a Roman or a Milanese pub. In fact, its owner is a former Roman citizen, Marco.

The Winery offers 153 different wines – and not only Italian ones – to its clients.

«Italian wines are excellent, but they are not the only ones that worth a try. Obviously, our wines are mainly Italian, but we have also excellent Spanish, Chilean or German wines. Every wine is part of a culture and we must be curious to discover new tastes.» Marco says us. «I try to take some time for each client. There are a lots of wine bars in Berlin, but there are too few that offer the possibility to talk about wines’ qualities and their possible matches.» And how about German clients? «They are very difficult, especially at the beginning. They like being on the safe side and the Italian wine they prefer is Nero D’Avola. It’s okay, but I think that people should always try something new. The great aspect of a Berliner is that he will sure come back, if you met his expectations. We have a large wine pub, but with few covers – we like paying attention to our guests’ comfort.» Here clients can take some time to choose the most suitable wine and this is not just a formality. Marco uncorks some bottles and offers his clients various tastings, in order to understand what is the most appropriate wine for each client. Furthermore, The Winery organizes special tasting sessions and delivers wines and food at home.

The aperitif includes the traditional bruschetta – seasoned with tomatoes and onions, with onions and olive oil, or with aubergines and pecorino. The Italian starter, made of different kinds of cheeses and cold cuts, is perfect for who wants to eat something that is light, but also tasty. If you can’t resist the temptation to a classic choice, there’s also the possibility to order a good dish of Italian pasta: bolognese, arrabbiata, amatriciana, contadina and many other recipes.

What we suggest? Lasagna or Aubergine Parmigiana!

Until 2009, Marco worked as a chef of an enlightment company. «From an economic perspective, things were good – but I didn’t tolerate the wastage, taxes and the sadness that I felt every time I came back home. I have always loved Berlin and that’s why I tried to start a new life here.» My passion for wines? «There’s always been inside me and so I decided to open my own restaurant/wine bar. I don’t know if I will live here forever. I’m living my life day to day, thinking about how I can offer the best courses to people coming into my place.»
