“Let the food be thy medicine and medicine be thy food” said Hippocrates in the 4th century B.C. and that is what happens everyday at “Cantina Sociale”, extraordinary restaurant and delicatessen, inaugurated in September 2015 and located on Zionskirchstraße, one of the most fascinating and smart streets of Berlin. The restaurant offers a great variety of Italian specialties such as: Culatello (a type of Italian cold cut), small salamis, Porchetta d’Ariccia (Italian product made with cooked pork meat from Ariccia, near Rome), marinated boar meat, cold cuts of any types and origins, pecorino cheese and other different types of Italian cheeses. It’s also available a great variety of high-quality wines like il Verruzzo, that is a red cuvee from the Maremma (an area of Italy bordering the Ligurian and Tyrrhenian Seas) that perfectly matches with Ricciolo, a type of cow’s milk cheese typical of Valsassina (a valley in the Alps of Lombardy, northern Italy, within the province of Lecco).
The buffalo mozzarella you eat at Cantina Sociale is unique: preservative free, irresistibly soft and fresh; it is bought in Italy at 9am and then served in Berlin in the afternoon.
Cantina Sociale is a dream come true of two Roman guys: Roberto, skipper and great sea lover, and Paolo, screenwriter for television, both with the passion for cooking and eating well. All restaurant supplies come from Tuscany and the province of Orvieto. Giuseppe is the food preparation supervisor: cantucci (Italian almond biscuits that originated in the city of Prato), lasagne (you should try those ones with spinach phyllo dough and béchamel), ricotta biscuits, and his special focaccia; these are only some of his amazing specialties. At dinner you can follow Pasquale’s advice regarding wines that best match with a selection of cold cuts or with the crostone, a type of bread baked with a slice of buffalo mozzarella.
“We personally try our products before serving them in Berlin. It takes a lot of patience but we want to serve quality and genuine food. Oil is the most important ingredient for us” says Roberto. “We wanted to open a restaurant where people could taste simple and genuine food. Our Cantina is a very informal place where the most important thing is wine and food quality.” Moderate prices, cordiality and two beautiful inside rooms: if you are looking for rare tastes of home, Cantina Sociale is the right place.
